akarta Transportation Agency officials have removed dozens of billboards from footbridges around Jakarta for safety reasons amid warnings of strong winds predicted to last until February.
“Up till now, a total of 64 billboards have been taken down, 49 have been removed by the team, 15 were dismantled by advertising agencies,” agency deputy head Sigit Wijatmoko said on Tuesday, as quoted by beritajakarta.com. The removal plan will continue as there are eight billboards that do not have permits.
“There are still eight billboards without permits that we will dismantle as we’re aiming for footbridges to be clear of illegal billboards as soon as possible,” he said.
The effort by the city administration to eliminate advertisement hoarding from pedestrian bridges arose following the collapse of a footbridge in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta on Sep. 29 amid heavy rain and strong winds.
The incident left three people dead and injured four others, according to the Jakarta Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).
