onditions are gradually improving and activities are beginning to return to normal in Bima, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) while post-flood mitigation efforts continue.
“Activities have in stages returned to normal. Markets and stores have resumed operations, although efforts to remove flood debris in many locations are still under way,” NTB Disaster Mitigation Agency head Muhammad Rum said on Wednesday.
Seventeen public kitchens have been set up, with a capacity to produce a total of 21,700 packages of nasi campur (rice with side dishes) every day, Rum further explained.
The public kitchens are located in 17 subdistricts, serving people who cannot yet carry out their daily activities, including cooking, because their houses and kitchen utensils were damaged by floods. The public kitchens also serve people taking refuge in temporary shelters.
“The number of people taking refuge has begun to decrease. Currently, 6,900 residents are still taking refuge in temporary shelters in 33 points, down from 8,491,” said Rum.
He said efforts to remove flood debris were being carried out with support from all relevant parties, including locals in their respected areas.
Main roads in Bima city are reported to have been cleared of flood debris, such as garbage and thick mud. Many residential complexes and narrow streets are still covered with flood remnants.
Rum said workers continued to clean schools with the hope that school activities could resume after school holidays ended early next year. “By Dec.30 at the latest, hopefully all schools will be clean.” (ebf)
