resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo will gather on Thursday a number of ministers and law enforcement leaders in a closed meeting to discuss the government’s strategy to clamp down on “provocative” rumors and hoaxes on social media, National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian has said.

Earlier in the day, Tito had said combating the spread of hoaxes, half-truths and fake news on the Internet was among law enforcers’ top security priorities for next year, as they could potentially create conflict at the grassroots level.
He pointed out, for example, that rumors claiming that millions of Chinese workers had arrived in Indonesia and taken jobs from locals were not just untrue but also created uneasiness. (hwa)
