he first debate among the three gubernatorial candidate pairs in the Jakarta election will explore nearly all problems facing Jakarta's residents, the Jakarta regional election commission (KPU Jakarta) said Monday.

The debate, which will kick off on Friday, will present each candidate several specific issues, such as social and economic problems, environment, education and security issues facing the city, KPU Jakarta commissioner Dahlia Umar told The Jakarta Post.

“The moderator will specifically ask each candidate about these issues,” Dahlia said, adding that the preparation is nearly complete including the debate prompts.

The Friday debate will be the first official debate among the candidates after previous debates hosted by private television stations failed to bring all three candidate pairs together, explained Dahlia.

She said the three gubernatorial candidate pairs had agreed to attend the debate, adding that there would be a punishment for any pair who does not show up.

She added that the debate would also be the first time all the candidates deliver solutions for the problems in Jakarta, which have not been discussed much since the start of the election campaign in November due to mounting sectarian issues.

Dahlia said the KPU Jakarta had communicated with the Jakarta Police to secure the first debate, which will see many of the candidates’ supporters in attendance. (dan)
