he West Nusa Tenggara administration has set a target to harvest 2.5 million metric tons of corn this year, in line with the target set by the Agriculture Ministry, which has called for an expansion of 400,000 hectares of cornfields in the province.
“We target to produce 2.5 million tons of corn to make the province the national corn center,” head of the West Nusa Tenggara Agriculture Agency, Husnul Fauzi, said Wednesday.
In 2016, there were 217,000 hectares of cornfields and 1.1 million tons of corn harvested from them. The numbers were higher than in 2015, which recorded 112,000 hectares of fields and 780,000 tons of corn harvested.
“The increasing number has earned us an award from the central government,” Husnul said.
He said the land expansion this year would be sponsored by the government. “The farmer groups will get free seeds and fertilizer from the government,” he added. (evi)
