Olympic shuttler Tontowi Ahmad will be paired with young talent Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja for the Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold tournament in Sibu this week.
The new pair will play as sixth seeds at the Sibu event.
For the previous six years, Tontowi has been paired with Liliyana Natsir, including winning a gold medal in the mixed doubles at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Liliyana will miss the Malaysia Masters due to a foot injury, which has affected her since November last year.
“We have prepared quite well so far,” Tontowi said as quoted by badmintonindonesia.org.
“I never consider Gloria as a junior player, but I will certainly share my experience with her [for the Malaysia Masters] and be open whenever she has input,” he said, adding that he would not set a high target for the event with his new partner.
Nevertheless, Gloria said she was ready to show her best, while tuning in to Tontowi.
“I think understanding our partner is the key. I personally want to win the title,” she added.
