Island focus: Police foil attempt to smuggle pangolins

P

olice in Jambi have arrested three men in Tambang Baru village, Merangin regency, for alleged involvement in the illegal trade in pangolins, which are a protected species.

The three men, identified as Adam, 36; Andi, 41; and Siaf, 36; were investigated after the police received a tip off from locals about the illicit trade, Merangin Police spokesman Sec. Insp. Echo Halasan Sitorus said on Monday.

“Police officers then found a Suzuki APV minivan with five live pangolins inside in sacks,” he said, adding that the suspects had been charged under the 1990 Law on conservation of natural resources and the ecosystem.
