WPP India XI, WISCI, Mavecrics, Fez Rebels register weekend wins

WPP India XI resumed its league action with a comfortable thrashing of a struggling Menara CC side in the Texmoda Jakarta Cricket Association (JCA) League over the weekend.

After electing to bat, Menara CC was in early trouble as Dhiraj Nagpal struck twice in his second over. Usman Mohammad tried to fight back, but Arun Rajain and Ajay Kurtkoti bowled well to run through the other end.

Mohit Keshwani hit a few boundaries but Menara CC once again ended on a low score of 89. Despite the loss of a couple of wickets to Faheem Butt, skipper Pallav Malhotra and Gaurav Pathak ensured WPP India XI got to the target in just 10 overs.

The second Division 1 game between Jaguar CC and WISCI Wanderers was a topsy-turvy game which went to the last over.

Riaz Hyder held up one end while a resurgent, Dave Holmes was back at his fast, best. The fall of Riaz saw Abdul Ghaffarand Shabbir Hussain put up some resistance, until Suhail Modak took two wickets in two balls to rock the Jaguars. Some late order resistance saw Jaguars claw back to a competitive 162 in their 35 overs.

WISCI were rocked early in their reply and were at 41 for four wickets, thanks to some good, incisive, fast bowling by Shabbir Hussain and Jagdeep Singh.

Jakarta’s Little Master, Rajeev Rajeswaran had, to call on his vast experience to patiently re-build the innings with a solid 50. Aman Singh and Irshad Birajdar then rocked the middle order to have WISCI on the ropes at 119/7. Skipper William Noronha and Holmes put on a fighting partnership to get their team closer to the target. Five runs were needed off the last over with one wicket in hand. Anand Khaira hit a four off the fifth ball to give WISCI a hard-fought win.

Jallikattu memories were revived when Challengers CC aimed to tame the Mavecrics — who have the bull as their mascot — in their T20 game.

Sanjeev Modi and Division 2 MVP Keyur Moradia got the Bulls off to a fabulous start putting on 99 for the opening stand. They were on-course for a huge total, but a few run-outs and a middle order collapse saw them manage only 147/6 in their 20 overs.

In reply, the Challengers CC started well, until the wily Nimesh Shah took out the openers. Fighting knocks by Vimal Nair and Satheesh Kumar had them back in contention until Keyur Moradia squeezed out the fight to take his team home by eight runs.

Fez Rebels CC comfortably beat Ceylon CC on the back of a good bowling performance.

Corbon Loughnan re-discovered some batting form as his 50 guided the Rebels to a good start. Tight bowling by Sachith Kanchana and Rajeev Kumar and two brilliant catches by Dihan ensured the Rebels could only manage 128 runs. The Rebels kept pegging away with wickets despite a patient knock by Mufasil PM and had Ceylon all out for just 84. Alfhariz, Corbon Loughnan and Gordon Jones were the pick from a good overall bowling performance by the Rebels.
