BNP2TKI secretary Hermono told The Jakarta Post on Thursday that the two victims would be brought back through Jakarta to their respective hometowns in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and Surabaya, East Java, on Friday.
There were 16 deceased victims found. Eight victims were safe, while another 16 have not been found. There were 40 people on board, according to the rescued victims.
The 16 deceased victims included nine men and seven women. Seven have been identified, five were from Surabaya while two were from NTT.
“The search and rescue process by the Malaysian team could extend beyond one week. We will leave it to the team [to make that decision],” he said.
The Riau Police are operating a center for the victims’ families at the Batam ferry port. Meanwhile, Malaysian authorities kept the victims’ bodies at the Sultan Ismail Hospital in Johor Baru for identification. The hospital is within one-and-a-half hours by ferry from Batam ferry port.
The capsized boat that transported the migrant workers allegedly followed an illegal route. This route is believed to have been used by illegal boats for tens of years.
