The head of the Jambi Family Planning Agency, Rasyid Ridho, said that long-term methods of contraception like Intra Uterine Device (IUD) were used 45 percent of the time, while short-term ones, like pills, hormone injections and condoms, were used 55 percent of the time.

“Short-term contraception is less effective because it requires regular consumption. What if they forget to take the pills?” he asked.

Higher pregnancy rates means a larger population, which could threaten food resilience and the economy in general and would increase the number of poor people.

“Long-term contraception is the primary means to control the population,” he said.

The number of people of reproductive age in the city is more than 90,000, all of whom would be the targets of a campaign for long-term contraception. (wit)
