T

he Jakarta administration is proposing to increase the operational funds for neighborhood and community unit (RT/RW) heads to, respectively, Rp 1.5 million (US$112.50) and Rp 2 million every three months.

“The operational funds increase is a follow-up to a decision made during various meetings between the governor with the neighborhood unit and community unit heads,” said Jakarta Governance Bureau head Premi Lasari on Thursday

Premi told a meeting with the City Council’s commission A overseeing governance that the initiative to increase the allowance came from acting Jakarta governor Sumarsono, kompas.com reported.

She added that many neighborhood heads complained that the funds were not enough to cover their operational activities like communal gatherings and attending meetings. The funds had not increased in the last three years.

According to data of the Jakarta Planning Development Board (Bappeda), the city has 30,337 neighborhood units and 2,728 community units.

If the city council agrees with the proposal, the city will allocate Rp 191.1 billion more from the 2017 city budget of Rp 356 billion for neighborhood units and Rp 39 billion for community units.
