he government has confirmed that the two light rail transit (LRT) projects in Jakarta and Palembang, South Sumatra, are on track to meet the target deadlines for completion.

“The Palembang LRT will be completed in 2018 in time for the Asian Games, while the Jakarta LRT will be completed by 2019,” Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said on Monday, adding that the latter had a later date as it had a slower start-date as compared to the Palembang project.

Budi added that the Palembang project had reached 35 percent in its progress, while the Jakarta project was at 12 percent.

Meanwhile, the Jakarta LRT project will connect the capital with areas in Greater Jakarta.

Budi further said that state-owned train manufacturer PT Industri Kereta Api (INKA) would have full authority over Palembang’s trains, while state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) will put the train procurement on tender. (lnd)
