T

he Jambi General Elections Commission (KPU Jambi) has called on the campaign teams of all candidate pairs running in three regental elections in the province to remove campaign materials from the streets ahead of the Feb. 12 to 14 cooling-off period.

“They [campaign teams] must remove all kinds of campaign material,” KPU Jambi chairman M. Subhan said on Friday.

Should the campaign teams fail to remove the materials, the KPU will coordinate with the Jambi Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) and the Public Order Agency on how to handle the matter. “We ourselves will take it down if they refuse to remove it,” said Subhan.

Candidates are prohibited from conducting any campaign activities during the cooling-off period to give voters space to decided which candidate to vote for on Feb.15.

“Let them think and decide who they will choose as their leaders,” said Subhan.

All candidate pairs in the three regencies, Muarojambi, Sarolangun and Tebo, are expected to respect the cooling-off period rules.

“They can go ahead if they want to honor residents’ invitations or to meet people to strengthen bonds, but please do not campaign or call on people to vote a certain way,” Subhan said.

Bawaslu Jambi head Asnawi said that during the cooling-off period, candidate pairs were also not allowed to hold mass gatherings in open spaces. The agency will also monitor possible vote-buying practices by involving polling station officers. (ebf)
