T

he traffic division of the Jakarta Police said on Monday that contraflow traffic arrangements on the Cawang-Semanggi inner toll road may last until December this year and would largely depend on the time needed to complete the Pancoran overpass in South Jakarta.

“This arrangement will go on until December or until the time the overpass construction is finished,” Jakarta Police deputy traffic director Adj. Sr. Comr. Indra Jafar said.

The contraflow arrangement began on Monday at 6:15 a.m. Next week, it will be implemented between 5:30 a.m. and 9 a.m.

“The contraflow doesn’t apply to weekends and national holidays,” Indra said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Motorists from Cawang in East Jakarta enter the reverse lane of the toll road at the Kilometer 1 and 700 meter (KM1+700) mark. The contraflow ends at the KM8+100 mark.

Indra said the policy was aimed at distributing the busy traffic toward Semanggi because of the overpass construction. The construction is slated to be finished in December this year.

The police have also temporarily opened up the Transjakarta busway lane to Semanggi to private vehicles. “The busway lane is not exclusive to Transjakarta buses and private vehicles entering the busway lane there will not be ticketed,” he said.

Bagus Cahya AB, general manager of the Cawang-Tomang-Cengkareng toll road, operated by PT Jasa Marga, said the contraflow might be halted if necessary.

Based on past experiences, Bagus hopes to ease traffic by 15 percent to 20 percent from Cawang to Semanggi with the contraflow policy.
