E

lection logistics have reportedly been distributed to all District Election Committees in Dogiyai, Papua, for the Dogiyai regental election on Wednesday.

''We are currently dropping the ballots at each polling station,” KPU Dogiyai head Moses Magai told The Jakarta Post.

There are 10 districts, 79 villages, 292 polling stations and 129,907 voters in the regency. Of the 10 districts, four of them – Central Mapia, West Mapia, South Sukikai and Playe – are located in geographically challenging areas. The distribution process to these four areas was carried out by plane, while the remaining regions received the logistics via land transportation.

The Nabire Police deployed 213 personnel to help secure the distribution process.

For this year's election the Dogiyai people continued to follow the traditional ikat system, in which a gathering occurs to help determine the choice for the candidate pair.

"Residents in some areas have made their decision, but those in Kamu district are still having discussions," said Dogiyai traditional community institutions secretary Aleksander Koga.

In regard to the ikat system, Moses said, KPU Dogiyai had encouraged residents to vote for a particular candidate based on the "one man, one vote" method, but residents opted to participate in the ikat instead.

There are four candidate pairs running for this year's election, namely independent pair Fransiscus Tebay-Benediktus Kotouki, Markus Wayne-Antian Goo, Yakobus Dumapa-Oskar Makay and Anton Yowau-Yanwarius. (trw)
