upreme Court Chief Justice Hatta Ali has been reelected to take the helm of the country's highest court after securing a victory in an internal voting process on Tuesday.
Out of 47 justices in the Supreme Court, Hatta received 38 votes, making him the chief justice for the period of 2017 to 2022. He bested justice Andi Samsan, who received seven votes, and justices Suhadi and Mukti Arto, each of whom received one vote.
Even though Hatta, 67, was elected for a five-year term, he will only serve for the next three years as chief justices are required to retire at age 70, as stipulated in the 2009 Law on the Supreme Court.
Hatta welcomed his reelection and vowed to put forth his best effort for his second term as the chief justice.
“I will devote myself to serve the Supreme Court and my country,” he said.
Before serving his first tenure as chief justice from 2012 to 2017, Hatta served as the court's spokesman and head of the Indonesian Judges Community (IKAHI). (mrc)
