ice President Jusuf Kalla expects Jakarta’s gubernatorial election to go on to a second round, predicting that none of the three candidate pairs will garner the 50 percent of votes needed to win outright.

Kalla, a senior Golkar Party politician, delivered the statement after casting his own vote for the capital, which is among 101 regions holding  elections on Wednesday.

“Everybody hopes for only one round [in the election], but there will likely be two rounds,” Kalla said on Wednesday at Polling Station No. 03 in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, as quoted by kompas.com.

The vice president did not elaborate on his prediction, but expressed his hope that whichever candidate pair wins the public’s mandate to head Jakarta’s administration would lead the capital fairly for the next five years.

Article 11 of Law No. 29 of 2007 on Jakarta’s special status as the capital city mandates that a gubernatorial election candidate pair must get more than 50 percent of the vote to become the elected governor and deputy governor.

This year, Jakarta’s gubernatorial election has three competing candidate pairs: incumbents Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama and Djarot Saiful Hidayat; Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono and Sylviana Murni; and Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno. (evi)
