research report on the environmental, social and economic effects of a reclamation project on Jakarta’s north coast should be made publically available as the project could threaten fishermen and other residents, an environmental law researcher has said.
“All information regarding development that has a great impact on the environment should be in the interests of the public,” environmental advocate Rayhan Dudayev said during a hearing at the Central Information Commission (KIP) in Central Jakarta on Thursday, referring to the public’s right to information as stipulated in Law No. 32/2009 on environmental protection.
Rayhan filed a request last August with the Office of the Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister to see the full report of research carried out by the ministry’s special committee.
The ministry rejected his demand in September, providing recommendation documents instead.
Earlier reports said the reclamation project would affect fishermen’s catches and increase their fuel expenses. The project would also be ineffective in preventing land subsidence, which has threatened the capital for many years.
The ministry’s legal representatives appeared as the defendants. However, they were not able to comment on the hearing as they were unable to show an assignment letter from the minister.
Presiding judge Evy Trisulo Dianasari adjourned the matter until Feb. 24.
