Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama has admitted that several areas across the city are still prone to flooding.
However, Ahok claimed that flood-prone areas had been significantly reduced.
“When I came into office [as deputy governor in 2012] there were 2,200 flood-prone areas. Last year, the number fell to 400," Ahok said on Monday.
He attributed the lingering floods to his administration’s unfinished river normalization project.
“The floods are inevitable because the Ciliwung River normalization project is only 40 percent complete. Nonetheless, we have already seen a good deal of improvement," Ahok said.
On Sunday, floods hit several areas along Ciliwung River, affecting 8,000 residents. (dmr)
