T

he Riau Islands National Narcotics Agency (BNNP) seized 1 kilogram of crystal methamphetamine at Tanjung Balai Karimun seaport and arrested AK, 35, who was allegedly trying to smuggle the drugs from Dumai to Karimun.

Riau Islands BNNP head Brig. Gen. Nixon Manurung told The Jakarta Post on Friday the arrest and the seizure of the drugs, which were estimated to be worth Rp 2 billion (US$150,000), had been successful thanks to an undercover BNN officer pretending to be a buyer on Tuesday.

“The perpetrator brought the sabu-sabu [meth] from Dumai to Karimun, but it originally came from Malaysia,” Nixon said about the origin of the crystal meth.

He said AK had admitted being the crystal meth courier to the undercover officer.

“He said he was paid Rp 20 million to deliver the sabu-sabu,” Nixon said.

He added AK would be charged with Article 114 of Law No. 35/2009 on narcotics, which carried a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

“Riau Islands is very open and narcotics from other countries can easily enter this region,” he said. (bbs)
