akarta Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat has instructed the Jakarta Water Resources Agency to add more sheet piles alongside riverbanks that are prone to burst in heavy rains.
"The agency will focus on installing more sheet piles," Djarot said as quoted by tempo.co during his visit to Karet Floodgate in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday.
"In emergency conditions when the rain keeps on pouring, we'd have to temporarily install barbed wire filled with stone," he said.
The stone-filled barbed wires could insulate the river and protect the lands from erosion, he said.
In the meantime, Djarot was still also overseeing citizens displaced by the flooding, some of whom have returned to their homes.
Once the weather has cleared, Djarot plans to task Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency with aiding residents in cleaning up their homes. The operation will also involve Infrastructure and Public Facility Maintenance (PPSU) workers.
"I'm amazed to see people helping each other out in the flooded areas," he said. (dea/evi)
