resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has set up an independent team to screen potential candidates to replace former Constitutional Court justice Patrialis Akbar. Patrialis was recently dismissed from his position following his arrest on bribery charges.
The selection team said registration for applicants would open until March 3.
"The registration is open today," selection team member Sukma Violetta said on Wednesday.
"We will work for about one month [before submitting the final names to Jokowi]."
Patrialis was appointed by Jokowi’s predecessor Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in a controversial decision critics say was marred by irregularities, including the fact that the decision-making process was held behind closed-doors.
Following Patrialis' arrest, Jokowi promised to hold a transparent selection process as he did in late 2014, leading to the appointment of justice I Dewa Gede Palguna, considered by many to be more progressive than his fellow justices.
Other than Sukma, who is deputy head of the Judicial Commission, Constitutional Court justice Harjono and noted human rights lawyer Todung Mulya Lubis are also in the five-member selection team.
‘"We are now focused on ensuring that persons entering the race have integrity and the right skills to do the job," Sukma said. (ary)
