espite weak domestic car sales in the past years, automotive firm Honda Prospect Motor (HPM), a subsidiary of major Japanese car maker Honda Motor Co. Ltd., has reiterated its commitment to further expand its businesses in Indonesia as customers’ demand for its cars remains high.

HPM, the country’s sole agent and assembler of Honda vehicles, celebrated on Monday 1 million units that it had produced over 14 years.

“The achievement of one million units of production shows that the customers' demand for Honda is huge. It also displays Honda Motor's commitment to invest in Indonesia," HPM president director Tomoki Uchida said during the event.

Industry Ministry's director general for metal, machinery, transportation equipment and electronic industries I Gusti Putu Suryawirawan pointed out the strong brand image built by Honda over the years as the key to win Indonesia’s domestic market currently bombarded by many car brands.

With the continuing strong demand, the government urged Honda to add to its investment and enhance the production capacity of its local plant in the future.

At present, Honda's two plants in Karawang, West Java, are able to produce 200,000 cars each year. They produce Honda Mobilio, Honda BR-V, Honda HR-V, Honda Jazz, Honda Brio and Honda CR-V.

HPM sold 199,364 car units last year, up 25.19 percent from 2015. (lnd)
