n an attempt to address and implement stronger measures to prevent the creation of fake graves in Central Jakarta, the municipal administration has vowed to heighten monitoring and improve land verification, in line with its public awareness campaign.
“Residents should take their burial permits to the administration [for verification],” Central Jakarta Forestry Agency head Munjirin Rasyid said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
Fake graves recently emerged as a new problem in the capital. The forestry agency, which also oversees cemeteries, recently discovered hundreds of fake graves, with officials reportedly involved in the illegal, yet lucrative business.
Munjirin added that a series of public awareness campaigns would be carried out to educate the public about potential harms should the illegal practice continue.
“We will also eradicate illegal levies at cemeteries,” he said.
He said people would no longer be allowed to reserve burial plots in advance.
”Any official involved in issuing illegal permits or illegal levies can be interrogated and they may lose their jobs,” he said.
Several reports suggested the burial plots were dug up to give the false impression that the cemetery was full. The officials would then sell them at higher prices. (fac)
