A

former terrorism convict has been hired as a cleaning supervisor by Purwakarta regent Dedi Mulyadi to help him get back on his feet.

Dedi says he hired Agus Marshal as a contract worker so that Agus would not be lured back into his former network after serving time in prison.

"I hired him to work as a cleaning supervisor in the Sadang and Cibening areas to give him a positive activity," Dedi said in Purwakarta, West Java, on Tuesday as reported by Antaranews.com.

The regent’s decision to hire Agus came after he failed to maximize the capital given by the regency for him to open a shop. Dedi then changed his offer and asked Agus to join the cleaning unit, an offer that was immediately accepted by Agus.

"It's better to be a cleaning supervisor. Our religion [Islam] also teaches that cleanliness is part of the faith," he said.

Agus will start the job in March. In addition to that, Dedi has also offered him a teaching position at Purwakarta Ideology School, which was set up by the regency administration to promote the values of the state ideology, Pancasila, and diversity.

Agus was sentenced to three years in prison in 2012 for his part in a heist to fund military training in Aceh along with slain terrorist Yayat Cahdiyat.

Yayat was killed in a standoff with police after delivering a pressure cooker bomb that exploded in the heart of Bandung, West Java, on Monday. (rin)
