he Jambi administration is planning to build a hazardous and toxic waste (B3) disposal facility, which it has included in its regional regulation draft (Ranperda) on the management of B3 waste.
Jambi mayor Sy Fasha said on Saturday the Ranperda had been submitted to the Jambi Legislative Council (DPRD). He said if it was possible, his administration would build the B3 waste disposal site inside the Talang Gulo landfill facility, which covers 10 hectares of area, most of which is unused.
Fasha said it was not a problem for Jambi to have a hazardous and toxic waste disposal site inside the city because the handling of such waste involves sophisticated technology.
“There are also alternative ways to handle the waste. Even if Jambi City doesn’t have a B3 waste disposal site, it can still partner with other areas,” the mayor said.
The Jambi administration could also work together with a third party to transport the waste to a disposal site, said Fasha.
He said Jambi city had an incinerator tool for medical waste at Abdul Manap Regional General Hospital (RSUD). All this time, all medical waste was taken to RSUD Abdul Manap. Following a recent haze disaster affecting areas across Jambi, authorities prohibited the use of the incinerator.
“We should have a hazardous waste management facility with better technology,” said Fasha.
The Jambi administration has been waiting for the approval of Ranperda at the DPRD before it can develop the B3 disposal site, he added. (ebf)
