More than 55,000 residents of Bekasi, West Java, are jobless, mostly due to termination of employment.
“The reasons for their unemployment vary, but most of them are people who were dismissed from their last job,” said Bekasi Manpower and Transmigration Agency head Sudirman on Wednesday as quoted by tempo.co.
As of March, the agency recorded that 55,724 local residents remained unemployed. To reduce the number, the city administration holds a job fair, which has been conducted annually since 2013.
Sudirman said the job fair was only able to provide jobs for half of the jobless residents which account for 117,695 as of last year.
However, he said he was upbeat that the number of unemployed residents would keep decreasing as the number of companies taking part in the city’s job fair surged to 1,504 companies this year from only 1,226 last year.
Training for senior and vocational high schools and university graduates is also provided to enhance people’s skills. (wnd)
