elays in the procurement of blank e-ID cards by the central government have affected services in areas like Klaten regency, where 40,000 residents are waiting for cards to be printed.

“We ran out of supplies of the blank cards in December and there have been no more deliveries until now. We can only provide data recording services [for residents] but we don’t know when we will print the e-IDs,” Klaten Population and Civil Registry Office head Widya Sutrisna said on Tuesday.

The central government had aimed to distribute 7 million e-IDs nationwide, but the Home Ministry has yet to sign a contract for the card procurement.

Amid a graft scandal that has allegedly caused Rp 2.3 trillion in state losses, the regional administration also cannot send recorded data to the central government as the central server has been shut down while investigations into the case are ongoing. In the meantime, regional administrations can only save their residents’ data on local servers.

“We can only give a statement letter as a temporary replacement for an e-ID. The letters expire in six months,” Widya added.

Surakarta municipality has also suffered from the absence of blank cards. The Surakarta Population and Civil Registry Office’s residents’ identity unit head, Subandi, said the city had issued more than 18,000 statement letters to replace e-IDs for residents.

Residents need e-IDs for many aspects of their daily lives. The letters cannot replace the main functions of the real ID cards, such as when making arrangements at banks and immigration offices. (rin)
