undreds of mineral and coal mining companies from across Sumatra gathered in the South Sumatra capital of Palembang on Wednesday to attend the fourth annual Sumatra Miner conference.
During the two-day event, which was also attended by representatives of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry and the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), participants will discuss issues related to the Indonesian mining industry, especially the availability of mining commodities such as gold, silver, lead and coal.
“The conference this year promotes the theme ‘Game Changer in Sumatra Mining,” Tim Duffy, the president director of PT Agincourt Resources, one of the speakers at the event, told The Jakarta Post on the sidelines of the conference on Wednesday.
Duffy presented the success story of the Martabe gold mine operated by his company.
“We successfully maintain social approval to operate [the mine] and fully comply with the high operational standards in terms of safety, community development, environmental protection and compliance with the law,” he said.

The mineral and coal development program director at the ministry, Sri Raharjo, emphasized the importance of environmental sustainability in mining operations.
“Millions of hectares of forested areas are problematic due to overlapping concessions,” he told the Post. “The mining potential in Sumatra is huge, making the chance of forest destruction high too.” (bbs)
