Regency secretary in Central Sulawesi gets six years for corruption

Ekka Pontoh, the secretary of Parigi Moutong regency in Central Sulawesi, has been sent to jail after the Supreme Court declared him guilty of corruption and sentenced him to six years in prison.
The Supreme Court has overturned the decision of the Palu District Court in the Central Sulawesi provincial capital of Palu, which had released Ekka of all charges.

The spokesman of the Central Sulawesi Prosecutors’ Office, Andi Rio Daeng Rahmatu, said prosecutors had executed the court’s decision.
“We have sent [Ekka] to the Olaya prison in Parigi today,” Andi Rio told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
Previously, the prosecutors had challenged the Palu court’s decision to the Supreme Court, arguing that the defendant had committed corruption surrounding the construction of four tourist ports in Parigi Moutong when Ekky was serving as the head of the regency’s Transportation agency.
“Prosecutors indicted [Ekky] for causing Rp 1.3 billion [US$97,500] in losses,” Andi Rio said. (bbs)
