B

ali is set to join the 2017 Earth Hour, an annual global demonstration in support of action on climate change, which falls on March 25.

On Saturday evening, everybody is encouraged to switch off their lamps and unused electronic devices as a symbol of their commitment to helping preserve the environment.

With "Shine a Light on Climate Action" as its theme, the main Earth Hour events in Indonesia will take place in two locations, namely the Lippo Mall in Kuta and the Catur Muka Monument in Puputan Badung, Denpasar.

The event will take place on 5 p.m. local time, with a street campaign and a march to familiarize people with the movement. Starting at 8:25 p.m., all the lights will be switched off for an hour. During the mass blackout, there will be a series of stage performances, including acoustic music performances, dance and stand-up comedy.

Several hotels across Bali have taken the initiative and decided to take part in the event by switching off lamps on their premises and encouraging guests to do the same in their rooms.

"We continue to remind people that Earth Hour is not merely a once-in-a-year action when we switch off lamps simultaneously, but it should also be a part of our lifestyle to save energy. At the same time, we can also do other things to preserve the environment, such as reducing the use of plastic and tissues, and recycling waste," Earth Hour coordinator Andri Purba said in Denpasar.

The mass switching-off will take place simultaneously in other major cities in Indonesia and worldwide. (ebf)
