woman named Risma Oktaviani, 25, and her toddler were held hostage inside an angkot (public minivan) by a man who threatened her and her child with a knife on Sunday night.
A man suddenly jumped into the moving angkot on Jl. I Gusti Ngurah Rai, Buaran, East Jakarta, at about 7 p.m. Aside of the driver, only Risma and her child were in it.
The man took out a knife and pointed it toward Risma, who was holding her child in her arms.
A patrolling police officer named Sunaryanto happened to be nearby. He attempted to negotiate with the knife-wielding man to let Risma and her child go, said the head of the East Jakarta Police criminal unit, Sapta Maulana.
“The culprit, however, refused to give in, even though he was panicky. After about half an hour of negotiation, the police decided to shoot him in his right arm,” said Sapta on Sunday.
