akarta Police chief Insp. Gen. M. Iriawan said police had detected suspicious activities around Novel Baswedan and warned him about them weeks before the acid attack happened on Tuesday.
“Before the incident, I told him to stay alert because of some of the cases that he was currently handling,” Iriawan said after he visited Novel at the Jakarta Eyes Center in Menteng on Tuesday night.
Iriawan had asked police officers under his command to guard Novel and keep an eye on his surroundings, but Novel refused protection.

"He might feel uncomfortable guarded by police officers," Iriawan said, adding that police found suspicious people around Novel's house two weeks before the incident.
"We have the picture and we will crosscheck it to see whether there’s a correlation to the incident," Iriawan said as quoted by kompas.com.
Police are still conducting an intensive investigation into the two people who rode a motorcycle to spray acid on Novel’s face. (hol/dan)
