F

ollowing a recent attack on senior Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigator Novel Baswedan, the KPK is thoroughly assessing existing protection protocol for its investigators and investigation staff.

“We are still determining the right protection model to safeguard investigators and prosecutors. We will make the decision after we find out the best protocol needed,” KPK deputy chairman Laode Muhammad Syarif said as quoted by kompas.com.

In order to conduct a comprehensive assessment, the KPK has involved various law enforcement agencies, such as the National Police. National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian said the police institution would be ready to provide security for KPK leaders and investigators following the attack on Novel.

The same offer also came from Indonesian Military (TNI) commander Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo. He offered to provide undercover soldiers to protect KPK investigators as well as leaders.

Novel suffered severe burns after two unidentified men hurled acid into his face two weeks ago. The KPK senior politician is currently being treated in Singapore.

The attack on Novel has raised concerns over the safety of anti-graft leaders, investigators and staffers who participate in investigations. Indonesian Corruption Watch (ICW) researcher Emerson Yuntho suggested that the KPK set up an independent security unit to be in charge of securing KPK’s leaders and investigators. (msa/wit)
