Putting it briefly: S’pore to take on Argentina

T

he Singapore Lions will take on the world number two ranked team, Argentina, in a historic match at Singapore’s National Stadium on June 13, announced organizers.

The fixture has been scheduled to mark the Football Association of Singapore’s (FAS) 125-year anniversary, and will see Argentina field a full strength team, set to include its talismanic forward Lionel Messi as well as star players such as Sergio Agüero, Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria.

Organized by FAS and international sport and entertainment promoter UNICESS, the match is part of four-nation tour that will see Argentina play Brazil in Melbourne, Australia on June 9, with the Socceroos then taking on Brazil in Melbourne on June 13, the same night as the Singapore fixture.

Speaking about the national team’s chances against such highly rated opposition, National Coach, V. Sundram Moorthy, acknowledged that the Argentines boast a long list of stars.

“Argentina are one of the top international teams and have in their squad many world-class players such as Barcelona’s Messi, Paris St. Germain’s Di Maria and Manchester City’s Aguero,” the coach said in a statement.

“FAS has worked very hard to finalize the match, which will benefit our players and coaches in terms of invaluable exposure as well as enhancing the level of sporting entertainment for fans in Singapore.

“I am looking forward to leading my country out against the two-time FIFA World Cup champions,” he added.

Tickets to the Singapore-Argentina match will be available for purchase through sportshubtix.sg on Thursday. Tickets are priced from Sin$40 to $188 each, with children’s and senior citizen’s tickets available at $25 each.
