T

he government expects the operation of dozens of new weighbridges to help improve road safety through tighter supervision as well as continuous dialogue with truck operators.

The government recently marked the inauguration of 25 new weighbridges across the nation with a ceremony in Tuban, East Java. Nine of them will be used as pilot projects.

The facility, also known as a truck scale, serves as a tool to measure the weight of trucks and its carried goods. The measurement is intended to detect and single out overloaded trucks, which can easily damage road structures.

“I have promoted the rules regarding weighbridges to the upstream industry, so they [businesses in the logistic sector] won’t commit any violations,” Transportation Ministry director general for land transportation Pudji Hartanto Iskandar said over the weekend in West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.

Pudji referred to a program declaration made by the Transportation Ministry along with the Indonesian Truck Operators Association (Aptrindo) and The Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT) to reduce number of accidents involving overloaded trucks.

Indonesia has 141 weighbridges operated by regional administrations. However, these facilities were deemed almost useless as they were marred by illegal levies, thus allowing overloaded trucks to easily pass inspection.

Law No. 23/2014 on regional administration, meanwhile, stipulates that the central government can take over the operation of weighbridges starting this year, a policy that is expected to better preserve road infrastructure.

With the activation of truck scales, the government expects to slash half of annual road maintenance costs amounting to up to Rp 20 trillion (US$1.5 billion). (hwa)
