Flash floods resulting from heavy rain have killed at least five people in the Central Java regency of Magelang.

Magelang Disaster Mitigation Agency head Edy Susanto said the flash floods had occurred on Saturday after intense rain in the Grabag subdistrict since noon that day.

He said the rain had caused Ndaru River in the village of Nipis to overflow and cause landslides.

He added that the search and rescue team had so far found the bodies of five victims of the incident, namely Sutar, 50, Sumisah 60, Mirah 30, Slamet, 60 and a child. In addition, he said, three people had sustained serious injuries, namely Nanda 13, Marlan, 30 and Aryanti.

A mother and her child had been reported missing, he said, adding that the evacuation and search effort was ongoing. (dis/dan)
