he proposed budget for next year’s simultaneous regional elections has reached Rp 11.3 trillion (US$ 878,795) and will be financed by regional budgets, according to General Elections Commission (KPU) chairman Arief Budiman.

The commission has spoken to 171 regional authorities scheduled to hold elections next year to come up with the figure, he reiterated.

“But it does not take into account regions that have not reported their budgets,” Arief said at the KPU headquarters in Central Jakarta on Tuesday.

He acknowledged that the KPU was frequently criticized over budgets that were deemed excessive, then explained that the commission always used the previous year’s figure as a guide, adjusting it only for inflation.

“If we are asked to be efficient, we will try to work more efficiently and we would love to see where we have over-budgeted,” he said. (dis)
