resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has called on relevant government officials to pay more attention to South Sulawesi's agriculture sector as it is expected to absorb workers and increase the social and economic welfare of locals.
The agricultural, forestry and fisheries sectors accounted for 23.29 percent of South Sulawesi's economy, the President added.
"I ask that we pay close attention to the development of the agriculture sector as this is one that I feel will be able to absorb a lot of workers and boost the welfare of its people, especially of farmers," he said during the opening of a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Palace in Central Jakarta on Tuesday.

In order to develop the sector, the President said it was vital that the construction of supporting infrastructure and facilities such as dams and irrigation be completed.
"Furthermore, there needs to be increased access to micro-credit programs. The development [of supporting facilities for] industrial development such as electricity, water and even infrastructure such as trains and ports must be prepared," he said. (bbn)
