ational Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian said a team from the Jakarta Police had been sent to Singapore to question Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigator Novel Baswedan on an incident in which he was attacked with acid.

“Today, if I am not mistaken, a team was sent to Singapore. The key witness [in this case] is Novel himself,” Tito said at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery on Saturday as quoted by kompas.com.

The police have yet to arrest anyone since the incident on April 11, in which Novel's face was splashed with hydrochloric acid as he was walking home after performing morning prayers at a mosque near his house in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta.

The police have yet to question Novel because of his health condition.

“Maybe he remembers the faces of the suspects, their vehicle. This information would allow us to move forward with the case,” Tito said.

He added that investigators planned to ask Novel whether he had a conflict with someone prior to the attack.

“It [the attack] likely has to do with his job [as KPK investigator] and the suspects carried out the attack to influence the legal process,” Tito said.

As a KPK investigator, Novel has led some high-profile cases, such as the e-ID case, which implicated several House of Representatives members and high-ranking government officials. (dis/wit)
