he South Jakarta Police destroyed on Tuesday 9,279 bottles of illegal liquor confiscated from bars, lounges and grocery stores across the municipality over the last five months.
“The destruction is part of our attempt to keep residents, especially young people, from abusing alcoholic beverages,” said Sr. Comr. Iwan Kurniawan, the South Jakarta Police chief, on Tuesday as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.
He said the seizures were part of the police’s monitoring of sellers who violated their business permits.
“We will keep doing this even after Ramadhan,” Iwan said.
South Jakarta Mayor Tri Kurniadi said the administration would intensify its attempts to control the distribution of alcoholic beverages, especially during Ramadhan.
“We have special teams for the matter, including one that will supervise nightlife during the fasting month,” said the mayor. (kuk)
