ith only two years left before the 2019 presidential election, the Golkar Party should begin preparing a vice presidential candidate for President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo after it officially endorsed him to run for a second term, a high ranking party official has said.

“Our position for the presidential candidate is clear, but the vice president position is still vacant. We need to select a candidate to fill the position,” Aburizal said during the party’s national leadership meeting (Rapimnas) in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, on Monday.

Aburizal said it was normal for a party to propose both presidential and vice presidential candidates. “Golkar can propose someone who would be suitable to accompany Pak Jokowi,” said the former party chairman.

In his speech, Aburizal asked all cadres attending the meeting whether they wanted to propose a Golkar cadre to be the vice presidential candidate. His question was met with cheers by the party members.

“In principal, no one is irreplaceable. When a leader is old and there is someone who can replace him or her, I think it is normal,” Aburizal said.

“Obviously, we are not only looking for a vice president position. We are beyond that. We want to expand our party’s contributions to the country,” he said.

Aburizal also called for the unity of the party and urged all cadres to resolve internal conflicts by adhering to the party’s rules and regulations. (dis/ebf)
