T

wo suspects allegedly involved in the death of three students from the Indonesia Islamic University (UII) Yogyakarta have surrendered to the Karanganyar Police.

Accompanied by their lawyer, Achiel Suyanto, the suspects, identified as DK and TN, came to the police headquarters on Monday afternoon.

DK and TN are two of the six people named by the police as suspects in the death of three UII students during the orientation program of the university’s Mapala UNISI climbing club in January. Thirty four students were injured.

“They didn’t have any intention to escape. My clients – DK and TN – had not yet received their second police summons,” said Achiel on Tuesday.

Earlier, the police were reportedly pursuing DK, TN and their friend, RF, after they all skipped the second police summons for questioning scheduled on Monday. The three other suspects – TA, NAI and HS -- were arrested in Ngaglik, Sleman, on Sunday.

Of the six UII hazing suspects, five have appointed Achiel as their lawyer. RF has not yet appointed a lawyer. He is reportedly ill and is being treated in Makassar, South Sulawesi.

Karanganyar Police chief Adj.Sr.Comr. Ade Safri Simanjuntak said the police had yet to decide whether they would detain DK and TN. “Let’s see the developments of the situation on whether we need to detain them.”

The police have detained TA and HS for the next 20 days while NAI, the only female suspect, has been released due to illness. NAI is now receiving treatment at Karanganyar Regional General Hospital. (dis/ebf)
