rance-based satellite launch company Arianespace, which has launched satellites for Indonesian state-owned company Telkom and Bank Rakyat Indonesia, is optimistic about the growth of its business in the Asia-Pacific region.

The company launched this year the Telkom 3S for Telkom Indonesia and KOREASAT-7 for South Korea’s ktsat, with three further launches scheduled in the remainder of 2017 for Japan and India.

“Overall, we have a 50 percent market share; it is slightly above that in the Asia Pacific,” Jacques Breton, senior vice president in charge of sales and business development, said during the firm’s press conference held in Singapore on Tuesday.

The Asia-Pacific region is a key market for Arianespace, contributing 60 percent to its global market share for commercial launches. This corresponds to 25 percent of the company’s global business.

To date, Arianespace said that Indonesia is the biggest market in Southeast Asia as the country has a huge demand for satellites, given its large population of 250 million plus people spread across 17,000 islands.

“There are more satellite operators in Indonesia than there are in any other country in Southeast Asia. Given the number of operators, Indonesia is extremely important,” said Richard Bowles, Arianespace managing director for ASEAN countries.

Arianespace has launched 78 satellites for 17 customers in the Asia Pacific since 1981.

The firm is a subsidiary of Airbus Safran Launchers, which holds 74 percent of its shared capital. Other European shareholders include MT Aerospace AG, Avio, RUAG, ESA and CNES. (bbn)
