Govt reshuffles two agencies responsible for oil, gas businesses

he government has reshuffled two agencies tasked with overseeing upstream and downstream oil and gas businesses in the wake of a plan to “merge” those agencies.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignasius Jonan announced on Friday the new composition of a committee at the Downstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BPH Migas) and appointed five new executives to the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Special Task Force (SKKMigas).
Fanshurullah Asa, who previously served as a BPH Migas committee member, was appointed the agency’s new boss. Meanwhile, Sukandar was appointed SKK Migas’ new deputy head.
Jonan has high hopes for BPH Migas’ new committee members to help the government fully implement the one fuel-price policy and to lower the costs of distributing gas across the country.
“I’ve been tasked by the President to create bigger efficiencies in this [downstream] sector. So, we’ll sit together and try to manage these matters once again,” Jonan said at his office in Jakarta.
Meanwhile, Jonan called on SKKMigas to find ways to further reduce costs in oil production and to develop a more efficient administration process in the upstream sector.
Lawmakers previously proposed the establishment of a new state company to take over the roles of BPH Migas and SKKMigas in a bid to cutting red tape and facilitate businesses.
The establishment of such a company will be included in the revision of the 2001 Oil and Gas Law, which is expected to be passed this year. (bbn)
