panel of judges at the Blora District Court in Central Java has declared Bambang Tri Mulyono, the author of Jokowi Undercover, guilty of defaming President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and spreading hatred, sentencing him to three years in prison.
The verdict was lighter than prosecutors’ previous demand of four years in prison.
Presiding judge Makmurin Kusmastuti said Bambang, 45, was guilty of violating article 28 of the 2008 Law on Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) and Article 16 of Law No. 40/2008 on the Elimination of Racial and Ethnic Discrimination.
Bambang, a resident of Jambangan village, Blora, Central Java, wrote in his book that Jokowi and Vice President Jusuf Kalla had won the 2014 presidential election with the help of media companies who “fooled” the public.
He also claimed Jokowi had falsified data before registering as a presidential candidate, and called Giriroto in Boyolali regency, Central Java, reportedly the birth place of Jokowi’s mother, a base for the defunct Indonesian Communist Party (PKI).
