lights at Rendani Airport in Manokwari, West Papua, were canceled on Wednesday morning after a Sriwijaya Air plane skidded 20 meters off the runway as it landed at the airport.
There was heavy rainfall in the area when the airplane, piloted by Capt. Dedi Herdiansyah and carrying 146 passengers and four crew members, landed from Sorong at 09:14 a.m. local time.
"All flights were canceled because the evacuation process was still ongoing at the airport runaway,” Manokwari Police chief Sr. Comr. Christian Ronny Putra said.
Around nine flights were canceled because of the incident.
Two heavy-duty vehicles were used to pull the plane body from the runaway.
All passengers were evacuated and there were no reports of casualties or injuries.
“The airport is temporarily closed until the completion of the evacuation process,” said Manokwari Airport staffer Sugeng. (hol)
