After months of political turbulence triggered by the blasphemy charges leveled against his political ally, non-active Jakarta governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, the President seemed more relaxed as he sought to woo Indonesian youth in his latest political outing.
Teaming up with top hosts Desta and Gina at Prambors, a radio station aimed at the nation’s youth, he went on air on Friday morning to chat about on lighthearted matters such as bicycle prizes, his vlog activities, favorite musicians and his distinctive bomber jacket.
For decades, Prambors has been an icon of youth culture in Indonesia. It has millions of listeners across the country, particularly commuters in urban areas including Jakarta, Makassar in South Sulawesi, Surabaya in East Java and Bandung in West Java. The Prambors twitter account has a total of 2.07 million followers.
Desta opened the Desta and Gina in the Morning program to introduce Jokowi as a special guest to Prambors listeners by asking why Jokowi always gave away bicycles to followers who could answer the quizzes he sets during his working trips at home and overseas.
Desta asked: “Why do you always distribute bicycles during your trips across the country and abroad? Why don’t you give prizes other than bicycles?”
“Because it’s too heavy to bring cars or motorbikes [during working visits]. Don’t you think carrying a car or a motorbike would be too heavy? And of course, they are too expensive [as prizes],” Jokowi said while chuckling at his own answers.
