P

resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo inaugurated at the State Palace on Monday seven newly selected commissioners to lead the Election Organization Ethics Council (DKPP) for the 2017-2022 period.

DKPP is a government-sanctioned body established in 2011, tasked to examine and conduct hearings on alleged ethics violations committed by officials and commissioners of the General Elections Commission (KPU) and Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu).

The new DKPP commissioners comprise two ex officio members of Bawaslu and the KPU, Ratna Dewi Pettalolo and Hasyim Asy'ari, respectively, and five figures representing members of the public – three of which were picked by the House of Representatives and two by the government.

The three House picks are former Bawaslu chairman Muhammmad, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) researcher Alfitra Salam and Satya Wacana Christian University’s (UKSW) school of law dean Teguh Prasetyo, while the government selected former Constitutional Court justice Harjono and former KPU commissioner Ida Budhiati.

The DKPP will have the tough task of monitoring ethics violations committed by Bawaslu and KPU members in the first ever concurrent presidential and legislative elections in 2019, said Muhammad, who argued that such unprecedented simultaneous elections would force political actors to intensify lobbying in all settings, including toward election officials.

Another reason, he added, is the lack of human resources at the DKPP to monitor all activities carried out by KPU and Bawaslu officials.

“We expect to have more officials to help the new leadership in the future,” Muhammad said. (ipa)
