Documentary Banda, The Dark Forgotten Trail by Jay Subyakto will be screened in Indonesia next month before being taken to the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam in November.
The film focuses on the history of spices in the Banda Islands and highlights the dark side of Dutch occupation in Indonesia by exploring the massacre of the Bandanese.
“They are interested in the film because I’m exposing the Dutch’s dark side in Indonesia,” Jay said as quoted by Antara news agency in Jakarta.
Unfortunately, he said, the history disclosed in the film has seldom been studied at schools. “It’s important history to teach so we can learn from it,” Jay said.
The film is the first documentary from Lifelike Pictures. Producer Sheila Timothy said she was interested in highlighting “hidden stories” in the region after learning of the significant influence of the Spice Trail to the Silk Route.
“The Silk Route existed because traders were trying to find their way to Banda,” she said, pointing out, however, there was a huge gap in the popularity of the Spice Trail and the Silk Route.
